To me this seemed a bit long for only 460 nm linear distance. Yet this is our 6th travel-day and so far it is not certain if we will be able to enter the lagoon today. The nice ENE trade wind wasn’t lasting. We spent all day yesterday tacking against moderate NNW winds. With our old bulgy sails this was not much fun. Now the wind died down completely and we are motoring along the northern reef of Hao. By 8 AM we have to reach the only entry pass into the lagoon which is situated at the north-west because that is about the time when the only slack-water of today might occur. The bottlenecks of the Chilean channels, for example Paso Shag or Paso Kirke, seem harmless in comparison to what we might expect there. When the tide is falling for all outgoing water of the pretty large lagoon there is only this one quite narrow passage. On top the high swell of the Pacific washes additional water over the low reefs in the southeast into the lagoon with the result that there is always a higher water-level inside. The relevant guides mention „permanent outgoing water with up to 20 knots of current in unfavorable conditions“. We will see.

03.07.2017 – 13:00 UTC (2:00 AM local time) //// S 18°15.74′ – W 140°14.68′ //// 23 nm to Hao-Tuamotus //////// In some travelogs it is mentioned that the trip from the Gambiers to Hao took 7 days or longer.
