Rain and wind transformed the bay in front of Rikitea in no time in a bubbling cauldron. Furious squalls performed autonomously the perfect maneuver which one needs to know in order to break an anchor out of the ground. Frank, a Dutch singlehanded sailor, was the first to suffer. In no time at all his boat ended up on a nearby sandbank. #0000ff;">//// The moment when we were busy to take the sun-shading down with the use of all our physical strength, our anchor started to slip as well. With the help of our engine we just about managed to escape a run aground on the reef. Possibly a row of buoys which was connected with ropes was actually holding Kalibu back for a few seconds, the time the engine needed to speed the boat away from the dangerous reef. Heart-stopping seconds later we gained some distance. But we had to fight for a couple hours until the situation was under control again. Shortly before our anchor started to slip, I was experiencing an extraordinary gust while trying to collect rainwater. This gust demolished one rotor-blade of our wind-generator, simply ripped it out of the bracing. Not enough the blade then punctured our solar panel as if it would be out of butter – fiberglass meets security glass! And destroyed the tail-light (stern-light) before landing on our sugar scoop stern. Meanwhile the other boats were struggling as well. With pooled forces everybody was trying to prevent worse.

//// The only option we had was to bring out our second anchor as fast as possible. Our good old Fortress (what a great anchor) was holding almost immediately which gave us a moment to catch a breath. Still for two more hours Thomas had to motor against the wind in order to release the force on our anchors.

//// Meanwhile Frank was running up and down on his boat but he could only watch as his keel was digging itself deeper and deeper in the soft sand.A French steel boat was colliding with the nearby steel-boat and the Dutch Lyra ended up dangerously close to the quay.

//// As soon as rain and wind settled a bit, help arrived for Frank. Three small motorboats with powerful out-boarders had to struggle for half an hour. It was obvious that they performed this maneuver not for the first time. Acting together one was pulling the sailboat down to a 30 degree angle while the other two pulled it forwards and lee wards. Still it took about half an hour to pull Frank’s „Liebelei“ from the bank.

//// The weather forecast was harmless. Further south was a gale and the Gambiers where shown just outside the windy area. The gale travelled a bit more north and hit our anchorage. We hope the next gale south stays where the computer model puts it. So every paradies has its down side.

20.05.2017 //////// When all engines are running in an anchorage and everybody is standing behind the helm of his or her boat, it might be because the wind was blowing in gale force from all four cardinal directions for the last two hours.
